The University of Birmingham’s MSc Urban Planning offers a flexible, online learning experience designed to equip you with interdisciplinary knowledge that is essential for success in the ever-changing field of urban planning.

With engagement from experienced faculty, industry practitioners, and peers, as well as a foundation in current research, the programme’s career-focused curriculum will equip you with the practical skills, terminology, and tools to make a meaningful impact in diverse, global urban settings.

  • 3 start dates a year (June, October, March)
  • 180-credit curriculum
  • 12 modules (10 credits each) plus a 60-credit dissertation

Through interactive online learning, real-world case studies, and expert guidance from experienced urban planning professionals, you will develop a diverse skill set for a wide range of roles within the field. You will gain practical experience in using data and technology for evidence-based decision-making, and build the leadership and communication skills necessary to drive positive change in the urban environment. 

This programme is structured to reflect key urban issues with a modern theoretical and practical lens, consisting of 12 compulsory modules and a research dissertation. During the programme, you will explore the breadth and depth of urban planning, and learn about its impact on environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Over 30 months, you will learn urban design principles, planning methodologies, policy analysis, and data-driven decision-making through a combination of theory and case studies.
